Weekly Pool Maintenance Tips
Try these weekly pool maintenance tips to effectively clean your pool.
Weekly pool maintenance tips – cleaning
Whilst there is no ‘one-size fits all’ approach to pool cleaning, start to understand how your pool is used and develop a plan to keep up with the regular maintenance required.
The most important thing is consistency; keeping the pool clean on a regular basis.
- Use a long-handled leaf skimmer to gather up leaves, insects, and any other debris floating on the surface of the pool. Try to remove debris before it sinks to the bottom of your pool where it becomes difficult to remove and is more likely to cause staining and discolouration.
- You should aim to vacuum your pool at least once a week. Skimming will only remove the leaves and debris that is floating, and most debris that enters a pool floats for 3-4 hours, so vacuuming is critical to keep a pool sufficiently clean.
- Use a brush to remove dirt that has collected on the sides and bottom of your pool. Brush sediment toward the main drain so it can be easily vacuumed.

Weekly pool maintenance tips – checks
- Filters screen out debris from your pool water, but they too require cleaning to ensure optimal performance. You should clean and maintain your filter according to the manufacturer’s directions. You can read all about the different pool filters here.
- Test your pool water frequently (daily or weekly depending on use) and add chemicals if necessary, following manufacturers’ directions. A regular shock treatment cleanses the water of algae, bacteria, dirt, and any other organic matter that may have entered the pool. Follow manufacturer’s directions for shock treatments.
- Pool water should be tested regularly to make sure it’s clean and healthy. The pH scale is a measurement of acidity or alkalinity that runs from 0 to 14. A reading between 7.2 and 7.8 is ideal and means the water is safe to swim in.

Depending on what other equipment you have, for example, what filter or heater you own, other weekly maintenance may be required.
We recommend creating a checklist of weekly pool cleaning and checks that are specific to your pool and pool equipment. This will take the guesswork out of pool cleaning and ensure you have a clean and safe pool to swim in all year around.
