A masterful blend of modernist architecture and mid-century nostalgia, Prospect House has been shaped to create a haven of soul and tactility. Home to the founders of Artisan Collective, Alex and Greg McLeod, the design pays homage to Alex’s grandparents’ mid-century dwelling, evoking memories of its classic rock-clad walling and terracotta courtyard by generous application of our stone and tiles.
To embed the home resolutely in its locale through materiality, incorporating textural surfaces was pivotal. “Instantly struck by the rich texture of the stone and variation of tone that was at play from piece to piece,” Alex was taken by the soft yet robust nature of Luca crazy paving.
Luca balances the home’s cedar paneling and muted joinery with its organic earthen ochre tones, extending underfoot throughout the home and external courtyards to forge a sense of grounded connection. The home’s interior space and exterior courtyards openly interact with nature, affording opportunities to connect with the landscape and capture views of Maungawhau/Mt Eden, Auckland’s tallest volcano.
“To act as a soft contrast to the rough volcanic rock walls surrounding the site, our vision was to find something that had a natural feel underfoot and a warmth of tone.”
Creamy Pendell batons clad interior and exterior walls to provide linear contrast and form two feature chimney walls, uniting the home with visually rich tactility. The small format limestone was chosen for its supple texture, smooth finish and dimensional accuracy.
In the bathrooms, Novara Technifirma mimics the ambient movement of flecked terrazzo while Nacre glass mosaic tiles add vibrant green sparkle to the organic-shaped pool.
Inspired by the memories of a mid-century family home, Prospect House harnesses light and sun through its courtyards and galleries, creating a space that feels both fully resolved and completely effortless.
