Remodel House Wespi De Meuron Romeo Architects
Rich in Medieval and Roman history, the southern Switzerland town of Ascona is strongly influenced by Mediterranean style architecture and characterised by its high stone retaining walls.
This remodelled house by Wespi de Meuron Romeo Architects is located on a steep sloping slight and originally had little relationship with the historical context or garden. The property, situated close to the town’s historical core, has stunning views over rooftops of Lake Maggiore and the mountains. The home is surrounded by an idyllic terraced Palm tree garden featuring aged local stone walls.
The house, a simple stone cube, has been designed to be integrated into the landscape and unity has been fostered with the existing stone walls. A variety of natural stone has been used throughout the home adding warmth, texture and beauty in the imperfection. Wespi de Meuron Romeo Architects have broken up the stone palette with traditional plaster, glass and stained and natural timber providing visual relief and enriching the mood within the interior spaces.
The result is a timeless home that relates to all aspects of the site through the celebration of natural materials and an attention to detail.
