A Longueville garden designed for living outdoors
After completing their renovation, the owners of this Longueville property discovered there was a noticeable disconnect between the house and the garden. The current design neglected to capitalise on the incredible city and water views, and the expansive outdoor space and pool.
“This formed the platform for the new design concept”, says Fifth Season Landscapes director, Phil Antcliff who notes the original landscape was disjointed and access to the individual outdoor spaces was poor.
“Our clients wanted a space to seamlessly blend with the house; an area for the whole family to entertain friends and to have the privacy to lounge around on the weekends enjoying the space”, explains Phil.
Beyond creating a comfortable resort-style space for outdoor living, the project scope included reviving the lower garden, that was at the time relatively unused, and updating the poolside areas.
While the site access was challenging largely due to the skinny entry, terraced terrain and the garden’s position 6 meters higher than street level, this didn’t overshadow the end result. In fact, Fifth Season Landscapes have used the site’s characteristics to their advantage. The changes in levels have enabled them to create zones in the garden including built-in terraced pool-side seating, a custom concrete outdoor kitchen and relaxed lounge areas.

With several destinations within the garden, Phil says the key to the project’s overall success was to understand the client’s needs and how the newly designed spaces would enhance their lifestyle. “I believe any successful project requires a harmonious blend of creative design and everyday function.”
One of the key destinations of the garden that gave the family a place to retreat to was the terraced lounging deck. “This is always in high demand with all members of the family, mainly used for hanging out with friends on a sunny day or just kicking back to read a book on a Sunday afternoon with the city skyline as your backdrop”, says Phil.
The Chalford® Limestone with its heavily-destressed finish and neutral colour tones perfectly complement the existing and new sandstone walls, explains Phil. “The large format Chalford® tiles was a key element as we needed a seamless connection from the upper to lower garden areas, forming the perfect backdrop for all the furniture and features”.
This garden has been designed for living life outdoors and fostering greater connections to the built form and the environment beyond. For Phil, the overall success of any project is the furnishing of the spaces once they’ve been built. “These elements really personalise the areas and help to bring the outdoor living spaces together”.
