How to clean an outdoor umbrella

If your outdoor umbrella is covered in dirt or is featuring unsightly mildew stains follow these steps to get your umbrella looking new again.

1. Using a soft bristle brush, remove any loose dirt and debris such as leaves.
2. Dilute a gentle laundry detergent in warm water and using the soft bristle brush clean the umbrella canvas working in small areas in circular motions.
3. Once you’ve cleaned the umbrella’s entire surface area, allow to sit for 15 minutes to loosen the dirt and grime.
4. Rinse the surface with a hose, ensuring you remove any soap residue.
5. Allow the fabric to dry well in a sunny area before storing away.

How to remove mildew from an outdoor umbrella

Outdoor umbrellas are prone to mildew and mould growth particularly if left outdoors all year round or stored away when still damp. To remove mildew from an outdoor umbrella start with these steps:

1. Use a soft bristle brush to remove any loose dirt and scrub the areas with mould or mildew well.
2. In a bucket, mix white vinegar and warm water of equal parts. Using the brush, dip it into the solution and working into the canvas in small areas in a circular motion.
3. Continue until the mildew and mould have been removed.
4. Rinse the surface off with a hose and allow to dry in the sun.
5. If required, follow the above steps for a general clean.

As outdoor umbrellas are exposed to rain, sun, dirt, debris and pollutants including bird droppings and tree sap, it’s important to clean your outdoor umbrella regularly. When not in use such as in the offseason, umbrellas are best stored away undercover and protected from the wet. If you are storing your umbrella after use, ensure it has completely to avoid mildew growth.
