Andrews Residence Preserving The Outdoor Space
The clients of this home enlisted the design team of We Are Considered to realize their vision for their outdoor space.
“As a young family, the owners wanted usable open space for the kids to play, integrated within the overall master plan for the garden,” says landscape architect Julian Pattison. Rolling manicured lawns provide the expansive space for play, while the soft mass planting adds visual interest.
A full-sized tennis court with its own drinking fountain, a swimming pool with an infinity edge and an undercover patio provided space for the adults to “let off steam” and relax outdoors.
“Colour, seasonal variation, plant texture and form all played a key role along with practical considerations associated with the provision of circulation space, privacy, shade and year-round outdoor living,” Julian explains.
As the garden concept was taking place, Evoke International Design were designing the family’s residence on the step plot. Working in close collaboration, both design teams came together to design the outdoor amenities to ensure the architect and landscape integrated seamlessly.
This is obvious in the design of the home with its oversized windows and sliding doors creating a strong connection with the private garden as well as the surrounding landscape and views.
“The garden is designed in a holistic sense,” says Julian. “A elements integrated within an overall planned composition.”
The heavily-wooded property enjoys views over the Burrard Inlet and the North Shore Mountains which no doubt influenced the landscape design. Some of the landscape remained including large firs and cedars as well as indigenous shrubs and ground cover.
Julian specifically chose to introduce a variety of plants and trees that would emphasize seasonal change and offer visual interest with their texture and form.
The hardscape acted as a background foil to Evoke’s strong architectural form constructed of concrete, natural stone, and timber cladding. The meadow-like garden appears to soften the clean lines and dominating presence of the architecture, clearly drawing it into the landscape.
Andrews Residence is a great example of how architecture and landscape can work together to create visual harmony as well as provide the clients with the lifestyle amenities to enjoy life outdoors all year round.
