Abandoned Stables
An abandoned stables in the province of Cáceres, Spain was destined for a complete transformation as Ábaton Architects began their concepts to make the old building a family home.
Showing the utmost respect for the environment and the original style of the barn, the architects used sustainable systems like solar panels and turbines to supply energy and water.
Natural stone from the local area was utilised in the construction of both the house and swimming to tie in with the style of the region. Inside, haylofts were converted into bedrooms with great connections to the outside thanks to expansive windows and doors. The remaining space was left open for family living within the kitchen, dining and lounge; all looking onto a stunning pool.
While finished beautifully with a high attention to every detail, the use of natural materials, a soft palette and a level of restraint keeps the home somewhat modest. Perhaps it’s elements like the simple lawn that butts up to the house, the large barn doors, and the organic bathroom sinks that remind us of the stable’s history.
